On a summer evening in Muncie, Indiana, the life of 34-year-old Samuel L. Gillum was brought to a tragic and abrupt end. On Saturday, July 30, 2022, while leaving a Walmart Superstore with his wife, Gillum was fatally shot. The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. at the store located at 4801 West Clara Lane. When police arrived at the scene following reports of gunfire, they discovered Gillum with a gunshot wound to his head.
He was quickly transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the shooting moved swiftly, and a suspect was taken into custody that same evening. Tyler C. Abrams, a 32-year-old from Muncie, was arrested around 9 p.m. in the vicinity of the 2000 block of North Nebo. Initially, Abrams faced preliminary charges of murder, criminal recklessness, and obstruction of justice and was held in the Delaware County jail without bond.
Subsequent legal proceedings revealed the calculated nature of the crime. During the sentencing hearing, it was noted that there was significant evidence of planning on Abrams' part, indicating that he had stalked and then executed Gillum. The attack was carried out in close proximity to Gillum's two young children. On April 2, 2024, Tyler Abrams pleaded guilty to murder and also admitted to a firearm enhancement.
Ultimately, for the murder of Samuel Gillum, Tyler Abrams was sentenced to 60 years in prison. The firearm enhancement added an additional 10 years to his sentence. The Delaware County Prosecuting Attorney expressed that society is safer with Abrams behind bars and hoped the sentence would aid in the healing process for Gillum's family and friends. Gillum was remembered as a beloved husband, a devoted father to his two young daughters, a brother, and a son.
