On the evening of October 29, 2022, Kevan Anthony Akbar, a 27-year-old male, was fatally shot while sitting in his car at a BP gas station located near East 30th Street and North Arlington Avenue in Indianapolis. He was transported to a local hospital in critical condition with a gunshot wound to his head and succumbed to his injuries the following morning.
Surveillance footage from the gas station captured the events leading up to the tragic incident.
A car parked near Akbar's vehicle, and a woman exited, entered the gas station, and then got into Akbar's car. Subsequently, Tiyuan Johnson and another unidentified man were seen on the video entering and leaving the gas station multiple times and interacting with Akbar at his car. After the two men walked away, Akbar continued to talk with the woman inside his vehicle. The men then returned, brandishing firearms, and Johnson fired at Akbar through the windshield.
A crucial piece of evidence, a cellphone, was discovered at the scene near Akbar's car where the shooter had stood. The phone contained Johnson's fingerprints and had his photo on the home screen, directly linking him to the crime. This evidence led to the arrest of Tiyuan Johnson.
In December 2023, 19-year-old Tiyuan Johnson pleaded guilty to charges of murder and possession of a machine gun. In January 2024, he was sentenced to 45 years in prison for his role in the death of Kevan Akbar. While the surveillance footage showed a second man accompanying Johnson during the incident, online sources and press releases have not publicly identified this individual or announced any corresponding arrests or charges in connection with Akbar's murder.
