In Lafayette, Indiana, a 25-year-old Purdue University student named Vijay Viswan, a male of Southwest Asian descent, died on November 25, 2022. The events of that day unfolded at a local indoor shooting range, Applied Ballistics. Viswan had gone to the facility and was in the process of testing out various firearms.
As the day drew to a close, just moments before the range was scheduled to shut down, Viswan intentionally shot himself.
Emergency services were immediately called to the scene, and he was rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after his arrival.
The Tippecanoe County Coroner's office investigated the death and confirmed that the cause was a gunshot wound. Following their investigation, the manner of death was officially ruled a suicide, pending the results of toxicology tests. This incident was noted as the second student suicide to occur at that specific shooting range within a two-year period. In the aftermath of the event, Purdue University acknowledged the tragic loss of their student and extended condolences to his family and friends. The university also took the opportunity to highlight the mental health resources available to its student body. Due to the nature of the death, there was no criminal investigation involving suspects or arrests.
