On a Thursday afternoon in Indianapolis, what began as just another day ended in a tragic loss of life. Melvin Hall Jr., a 37-year-old Black man, was discovered in his car on the city's east side, having been fatally shot. The incident occurred around noon on December 15, 2022, near the intersection of East 24th Street and North Kitley Avenue. Witnesses at the scene described a man standing in the street, firing multiple shots into the passenger side of Hall's vehicle before quickly fleeing on
foot. When first responders arrived, they found Hall slumped over in the driver's seat, having sustained several gunshot wounds.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department immediately launched a homicide investigation. While the motive for the shooting was not initially clear, the diligent work of detectives and the cooperation of the community soon pointed to a suspect. A crucial witness provided a description of the shooter, including distinctive red shoes and a red hat. This description, combined with forensic evidence, led investigators to 27-year-old Antonio Johnson. Fingerprints found on the passenger side door of Hall's car were a match to Johnson.
Further solidifying the case against him, a Facebook Live video from the day before the shooting surfaced, showing Johnson wearing the same red hat and shoes described by the witness. Following the shooting, Johnson's behavior grew increasingly erratic. He sought help from a relative, asking for a ride out of the area and instructing them to get rid of his clothes. The relative later turned these clothes over to the police, which further corroborated the witness's account.
With a growing body of evidence against him, Antonio Johnson was arrested and charged with the murder of Melvin Hall Jr. In September 2024, Johnson pleaded guilty to the charge. He was subsequently sentenced to 45 years in the Indiana Department of Correction for his role in the death of Melvin Hall Jr.
