On a summer day in Roanoke, Virginia, Patrolman John H. Leverett, a dedicated officer with the Roanoke City Police Department for a brief four months, met a tragic and untimely end. On June 21, 1916, while in the process of serving a warrant to a local man, a routine duty turned fatal. As Patrolman Leverett was escorting the individual from his residence, the man managed to retrieve a handgun concealed within a drawer.
