Joseph Burl Jennings, a sergeant with the Roanoke City Police Department, succumbed to gunshot wounds on June 28, 1965, at the age of 74. These injuries were sustained 20 years earlier, on September 26, 1945, while he was attempting to arrest a suspect at a garage located at Sixth Street and Centre Avenue Northwest in Roanoke, Virginia.
