In the late evening hours of November 25, 1967, in Petersburg, Virginia, the life of 34-year-old Patrol Officer Eugene Hollins Sr., a Black/African American male, was tragically cut short in a senseless act of violence. Officer Hollins was responding to a report of shots fired near the intersection of Harding and Mistletoe Streets. While engaged in conversation with two individuals who had made the complaint, he was suddenly and without provocation shot in the chest and thigh.
Despite his grave injuries, the two complainants acted quickly, using his own patrol car to rush him to a nearby hospital. Tragically, the efforts to save him were in vain, and Officer Hollins succumbed to his wounds shortly after arriving. He had served with the Petersburg Police Department for three years and was a husband and a father to an 11-year-old son. Before his career in law enforcement, he had been a professional basketball player with the Cincinnati Royals, Syracuse Nationals, and the Harlem Globetrotters.
The investigation that followed revealed a chillingly random motive. The perpetrator had not targeted Officer Hollins specifically but had expressed a desire to shoot any police officer. In a swift turn of events, two off-duty police officers apprehended the suspect just twenty minutes after the fatal shooting. The individual responsible was subsequently brought to justice. On January 16, 1968, the suspect was convicted of the murder of Officer Eugene Hollins Sr. and was sentenced to life in prison, closing a painful chapter for the community but leaving an irreplaceable void for the family and colleagues of the fallen officer.
