In the small community of Dolphin, Virginia, Patricia L. Vaughan and her husband, Lawrence T. Vaughan, were well-known as the owners of Lawrence's Grocery, a business they had established together in 1981. For years, the store served as a local gathering spot, a place where neighbors could catch up while picking up necessities. But on August 21, 1998, the familiar peace of the store was shattered in an act of brutal violence that would forever alter the lives of the Vaughan family and stun the
close-knit town.
On that tragic day, two individuals, Kevin Green and his 16-year-old nephew David Green, entered Lawrence's Grocery with the intention of robbing it. The situation quickly escalated, and Patricia Vaughan, a 53-year-old female, was shot four times. Her husband, Lawrence, was also shot twice but managed to survive the horrific attack. The assailants fled the scene, leaving a devastating aftermath. Patricia Vaughan died from her injuries at the store she had run with her husband for over a decade.
Following the robbery and murder, Kevin and David Green fled to Washington but were apprehended by law enforcement upon their return to Virginia. Both subsequently confessed to their involvement in the crime. The legal process that followed saw Kevin Green convicted for his role in the murder of Patricia Vaughan and sentenced to death. After a series of appeals, his execution by lethal injection took place on May 27, 2008. David Green, for his part in the crime, received a 23-year prison sentence. The violent end to Patricia Vaughan's life also marked the end of an era for the Dolphin community, as Lawrence's Grocery, the scene of the tragedy, closed its doors for good.
