In the early morning hours of September 10, 1998, a tragedy unfolded in a quiet Hampton, Virginia home that would claim the lives of a young mother and her son. Nathan Mark Bailey, a two-year-old boy, was fatally shot in his bedroom. His mother, 21-year-old Katherine Esther “Katie” Logan Bailey, was also found shot to death in her bed. The horrific events were set in motion by Nathan's father and Katherine's husband, Mark Wesley Bailey.
Mark Bailey, a Navy machinist mate, initially
attempted to deceive investigators by staging the scene to look like a home invasion. He cut a bathroom window screen and severed the telephone cord before heading to work, where he fabricated a story about his wife being threatened and abducted. However, his elaborate deception quickly unraveled. After failing a polygraph examination, Mark Bailey confessed to the brutal murders of his wife and son. He claimed his motive was his wife's alleged infidelity.
The investigation revealed a premeditated and cold-blooded plan. Months before the murders, Mark Bailey had borrowed the. 22-caliber pistol he would use and had been telling coworkers fabricated stories about threats against his wife to lay the groundwork for his cover story. On that fateful morning, he shot his sleeping wife three times in the head. Moments later, he went to his son's room and shot Nathan twice as the toddler was climbing out of his bed.
In 1999, a jury found Mark Wesley Bailey guilty of the capital murder of his son, Nathan, and the first-degree murder of his wife, Katherine. He was sentenced to death for Nathan's murder and received a life sentence for Katherine's. Throughout his trial and appeals, his defense team argued that he suffered from undiagnosed mental health issues, including manic depression. Despite these claims, his conviction and death sentence were upheld. After exhausting his appeals, Mark Wesley Bailey was executed by lethal injection on July 22, 2004.
