On a tragic Friday night in September of 2000, Daniel Lee 'Danny' Overstreet, a 43-year-old man, lost his life in a senseless act of violence at the Backstreet Café in Roanoke, Virginia. The establishment was known as a welcoming place for the gay and lesbian community, a place where Overstreet was a regular patron. That evening, a man named Ronald Edward Gay entered the bar, ordered a beer, and then opened fire on the patrons, killing Overstreet and wounding six other people.
