On a quiet morning in the Oak Level community of Henry County, Virginia, the tranquility was shattered on August 15, 2002, with the grim discovery of a double murder. Mary Short and her husband, Michael, were found dead in their home, both victims of a single gunshot wound to the head. An employee of Michael's discovered the scene around 9 a.m. Mary was found in her bedroom, while Michael was on a couch in the garage. Investigators noted that the home's phone line had been cut.
The couple's 9-year-old daughter, Jennifer, was missing from the home, sparking a frantic search and an Amber Alert.
The search for Jennifer ended in heartbreak six weeks later. On September 25, 2002, her skeletal remains were discovered by a man's dogs near a stream in Stoneville, North Carolina, about 30 miles from her home. An autopsy revealed that, like her parents, Jennifer had also been shot in the head. The discovery intensified the investigation into the triple homicide, a case that has become the longest-running active investigation for the Henry County Sheriff's Office.
Over the years, numerous leads have been pursued, but no arrests have been made in the execution-style murders of the Short family. In the early stages of the investigation, a carpenter named Gary Bowman was considered a person of interest but was later cleared. A significant reward is being offered for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the deaths of Michael, Mary, and Jennifer Short.
