In the fall of 2006, a horrific act of violence shattered the community of Winchester, Virginia, resulting in the tragic death of 17-year-old Travis Putnam and three members of his family. The devastating events unfolded on October 5, 2006, leaving a lasting scar on the quiet town. Travis, a male, was found deceased from gunshot wounds to the chest and head.
The ensuing investigation led police to 20-year-old Jessi Ashton Jephson, who was identified as the prime suspect in the quadruple homicide. The other victims were Jephson's ex-girlfriend, 19-year-old Amanda Orndorff, her 23-month-old son Christopher, and her 60-year-old father, Samuel William Orndorff. Authorities discovered the bodies of Amanda and her son in their home, while Samuel Orndorff was found in a vehicle in the driveway. Travis Putnam's body was discovered next door, in the residence where Jephson lived.
Law enforcement officials tracked Jephson to a secluded area approximately 10 miles from the crime scene. He was armed with a handgun but surrendered to authorities without incident. Upon his arrest, Jephson reportedly confessed to shooting Amanda Orndorff. Investigators also determined that the handgun used in the killings had been stolen.
Jessi Ashton Jephson was initially charged with one count of capital murder and one count of first-degree murder in the deaths of Samuel and Amanda Orndorff. Later, he faced two additional counts of capital murder and two more counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Christopher Orndorff and Travis Putnam. A grand jury indicted him on several other charges, including capital murder of more than one person within a three-year period, two counts of using a firearm during a murder, grand larceny for the theft of the handgun, and auto theft. A look into Jephson's social media revealed a chilling detail; he had listed Travis Putnam as one of his top friends online and mentioned 'chillin with my boy Putman.'
