In the early morning hours of August 3, 2013, a gathering at the Lexington Apartments in Norfolk, Virginia, turned deadly, claiming the life of 20-year-old LaRon Daquan Davis. The male victim, affectionately known as 'Weeble,' was with another man, Tanner Amos, when the fatal encounter unfolded. The series of events that led to the shooting began at a party where Davis and Amos met Latreal Dar'v-Donnie Bland.
The three later arranged to meet at the apartment complex.
Upon their arrival at the Lexington Apartments, an eruption of violence shattered the night. Without any apparent altercation, Latreal Bland opened fire, shooting Amos multiple times. Davis was also struck by gunfire, sustaining wounds to his hand, back, left buttock, left forearm, left thigh, and head. Emergency responders found the two men outside in the 800 block of E. Princess Anne Road. While Amos was critically injured and ultimately confined to a wheelchair, Davis was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the shooting led Norfolk police to identify brothers Latreal Dar'v-Donnie Bland and Lavonta Montreal Bland as the perpetrators. Their subsequent arrests brought the case to the judicial system. Latreal Bland ultimately pleaded guilty to charges of second-degree murder, malicious wounding, and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. His plea agreement resulted in a 53-year sentence with 37 years suspended, leaving him to serve 16 years in prison.
His younger brother, Lavonta Bland, faced a trial where he was found guilty of a host of more severe charges, including first-degree murder, aggravated malicious wounding, robbery, conspiracy, and several firearm-related offenses. The weight of his convictions was reflected in his sentence of 98 years in prison, bringing a measure of closure to the violent death of LaRon Daquan Davis.
