In the late hours of a Sunday evening in August 2013, the community of the London Oaks public housing complex in Portsmouth, Virginia, was shattered by an act of violence that claimed the life of one man and left four others wounded. Aron Turner, a 31-year-old male resident of Portsmouth, was pronounced dead at the scene from gunshot wounds.
The incident unfolded just after 11:00 p.m. when police were summoned to the apartment complex on Mount Vernon Avenue.
According to initial reports, a group of individuals were visiting an apartment when one or more suspects entered the residence and opened fire. In the ensuing chaos, Turner was fatally wounded. Two other men were discovered in an adjacent parking lot, also suffering from gunshot wounds. They were transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital for treatment.
As the investigation commenced, two more victims, who had also been shot on Mount Vernon Avenue, arrived separately at Sentara Norfolk General and Maryview Hospital. The surviving victims, ranging in age from 29 to 34, were reported to be in serious to guarded condition. In the immediate aftermath, law enforcement indicated that the suspects had fled the scene on foot. A description of the assailants was not released to the public, and the motive behind the shooting remained unknown.
In the days that followed, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development began working with the management of the London Oaks Apartments to enhance security measures. The violent event left the residents of the housing complex feeling increasingly unsafe, with some citing concerns about ongoing gang and drug activity in the area.
