On a warm summer evening in Richmond, Virginia, the life of 18-year-old Garrick Lamont 'G' Ellis was tragically cut short. The year was 2013, specifically the night of August 17th, when Ellis, a senior at Thomas Jefferson High School known for his vibrant and lovable personality, was walking with friends. They were on their way to a party in the 3000 block of 4th Avenue when they crossed paths with another group of individuals leaving the same event.
Words were exchanged between the two
groups, but according to investigators, the interaction was not hostile, merely a casual greeting. Shortly after this brief encounter, the sound of three small pops, initially mistaken for firecrackers, rang out in the night. It wasn't until Ellis cried out that he had been hit that the grave reality of the situation became clear. Struck by a small-caliber bullet in the neck, he ran to a nearby street before collapsing in a parking lot on East Brookland Park Boulevard. Emergency services arrived to find a large crowd surrounding the young man as they rendered aid. He was rushed to VCU Medical Center, but his injuries proved fatal, and he died later that night.
