In the autumn of 2013, the life of a young Richmond man was tragically cut short. Toren Maryel Waller, a 23-year-old male, was discovered deceased from multiple gunshot wounds shortly before midnight on the evening of October 5, 2013. The fatal incident occurred in the St. John's Woods community, located on Harrow Road in the Southside of the city. At the time of his death, Waller was a resident of Henrico County and was employed by the Verizon Company.
He was also a father, leaving behind a young son.
The investigation into the violent death of Toren Waller led authorities to a suspect. Marichel “Outlaw” Clayburn, a Richmond man, was subsequently arrested and charged in connection with the killing. The evidence presented during the legal proceedings painted a grim picture of the final moments of Waller's life, revealing he had been shot a total of nine times.
Following a trial in Richmond Circuit Court, a jury deliberated for approximately five hours before reaching a verdict. Marichel Clayburn was convicted of first-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. For these crimes, the jury recommended a significant sentence, putting forward a penalty of life in prison for the murder conviction, with an additional and mandatory five years for the firearm charge, ensuring that the man responsible for the death of Toren Maryel Waller would be held accountable for his actions.
