Brooke Alexandra Dooley, a 17-year-old female from Chesapeake, Virginia, was a vibrant senior at Deep Creek High School with a promising future ahead of her. She was actively involved in her school as a cheerleader and had a passion for softball. In addition to her high school studies, Brooke was pursuing a future in healthcare through the Practical Nursing Program at the Chesapeake Center for Science and Technology.
Described as a beloved 'daddy's girl,' she was an active member of the youth group at Temple Baptist Church and was known for encouraging her friends to join her.
The tragic events that led to Brooke's death unfolded on Wednesday, January 27, 2016, in what was later determined to be a murder-suicide that claimed the lives of six family members. The incident began when Chesapeake police were dispatched to conduct a welfare check at a home on Wildwood Road in the Deep Creek section of the city. Inside, they made the grim discovery of Brooke's 22-year-old brother, Landon Dooley, who was deceased.
The investigation quickly pointed them to a second family residence a few blocks away on North George Washington Highway. At this location, they found an armed individual, identified as Brooke's 26-year-old brother, Cameron Dooley, barricaded inside. Authorities cordoned off the neighborhood and engaged in several hours of negotiations in an attempt to have him surrender peacefully. When the negotiations ultimately failed, officers made entry into the home.
Once inside, the full scope of the tragedy was revealed. Police discovered five deceased individuals, including Cameron Dooley, who had taken his own life. The other victims were identified as Brooke, her father, 50-year-old Steven 'Todd' Dooley, her mother, 54-year-old Lori Dooley, and her 74-year-old grandmother, Doris Dooley. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner later confirmed that all five homicide victims died from gunshot wounds. Investigators believe that Cameron Dooley shot and killed his family members before the police arrived at the initial scene. While no official motive was released, it is believed that the violence was the result of a domestic issue. Family members indicated that Cameron had a history of mental illness and that a recent family decision regarding his living situation may have been a catalyst for the tragic events.
