In the early hours of a Saturday morning in November 2013, the life of 18-year-old Denishe-Ya King was tragically cut short. A senior at King's Fork High School in Suffolk, Virginia, she was the youngest person attending a house party on St. James Avenue.
A disagreement that began inside the party escalated, spilling into the street. The verbal altercation turned physical, and amidst the chaos, gunshots rang out, causing those involved to scatter. When emergency services arrived at 2:27 a.m. in response to calls about a fight and shots fired, they found Denishe-Ya lying in the street with gunshot wounds. Despite the efforts of Suffolk Fire & Rescue, she was pronounced deceased at the scene at 2:42 a.m.
In the wake of her death, crisis counselors were made available to students at King's Fork High School, where many were struggling to cope with the loss of their classmate. Students organized a vigil and sold ribbons to help raise money for her funeral arrangements. The school's principal reached out to parents with a recorded message, offering condolences and support for the grieving student body. Suffolk Police detectives began an investigation, interviewing potential witnesses to piece together the events that led to the fatal shooting.
