On an evening in April 2014, a dispute that began over the sale of CDs in a shopping center parking lot escalated into a fatal encounter. The male victim, 44-year-old Antonio Harris, was shot and killed at Southside Plaza in Richmond, Virginia. The conflict started earlier in the day when Harris and his brother had a confrontation with a man named Shawne Cotten.
This initial altercation reportedly involved an assault on Cotten and damage to his vehicle.
Later that same evening, the situation took a tragic turn. Cotten returned to the shopping plaza with his fiancée, Jodi Hope, and his mother. Seeking retaliation, Hope confronted the Harris brothers. As Antonio and his brother were walking away in the parking lot, Hope opened fire, discharging her weapon multiple times. Antonio Harris was struck and fatally wounded, while his brother was also shot but survived his injuries. At the time of the shooting, both of the Harris brothers were unarmed.
The subsequent police investigation led to the arrest of Jodi Hope, a Chesterfield mother and nursing assistant. She was charged in connection with the double shooting. During her trial, which spanned six days and included numerous witnesses, Hope claimed that she had acted in self-defense. However, the evidence presented by the prosecution painted a different picture, one of a planned act of vengeance.
Ultimately, the jury rejected Hope's self-defense claim and found her guilty of second-degree murder, aggravated malicious wounding, and two firearms charges. The jury recommended a sentence of 48 years in prison for her role in the shooting that ended Antonio Harris's life and severely injured his brother. The conviction brought a measure of justice to a case that stemmed from a seemingly minor dispute that spiraled into deadly violence.
