Lorenzo Harris, a 24-year-old Black man, was tragically shot and killed on the night of Monday, August 11, 2014, in Henrico, Virginia. The incident occurred shortly before 11 p.m. in the parking lot of the Azalea Garden Apartments located in the 3700 block of Delmont Street in eastern Henrico County. Responding to a call about a shooting, Henrico Police officers discovered Harris suffering from a gunshot wound. He was immediately transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into Harris's death moved swiftly, and within a day, a suspect was taken into custody. On Tuesday, August 12, 2014, Henrico Police arrested 17-year-old Shaquille Maxwell in connection with the fatal shooting. The U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force assisted in locating and apprehending the teenage suspect.
Following his arrest, Shaquille Maxwell was charged with the murder of Lorenzo Harris. In addition to the murder charge, he also faced charges of using a firearm in the commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Due to the serious nature of the crime, Maxwell was tried as an adult.
In a subsequent court appearance on Wednesday, August 13, 2014, Maxwell was arraigned on the charges brought against him. During the proceedings, he was officially informed of the accusations he faced in the death of Lorenzo Harris. Court records later revealed that Shaquille Maxwell was convicted of second-degree murder and a firearm charge related to the homicide. For these crimes, he received a significant prison sentence, totaling 21 years of active incarceration.
