In the early morning hours of October 12, 2014, the life of 32-year-old Julius Keon Giggetts was tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire at the intersection of Park Street and Elwood Avenue in Martinsville, Virginia. A Black male, Giggetts was one of two men who lost their lives that day in what would be investigated as a double homicide. The other victim was identified as Orlando Akridge. A third man was also wounded in the shooting but survived his injuries.
The events leading to the fatal shooting began with an altercation at a party on Polk Street earlier that night. The dispute escalated and eventually spilled out onto the streets, culminating in the deadly encounter on Park Street where witnesses reported hearing as many as ten gunshots. The violent incident sent shockwaves through the Martinsville community.
In the wake of the killings, the Martinsville Police Department quickly identified a suspect, 20-year-old Parnell Markese Rucker, also of Martinsville. Rucker subsequently turned himself in to the authorities and was charged with two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony. Investigators stated that the suspect and the victims were acquainted with each other, though a specific motive for the shooting remained under investigation.
Julius Keon Giggetts, born on January 25, 1982, in Roanoke, Virginia, was a father to three sons. His death was a profound loss to his family and friends. Funeral services were held for him on October 19, 2014, at Cross Point Church, and he was laid to rest at Carver Memorial Gardens in Martinsville.
