In the crisp autumn air of November 10, 2014, the life of 16-year-old Brenden Michel Wilson was tragically cut short in a wooded area near Woodbridge Senior High School in Virginia. A junior and a ROTC cadet at the school, Brenden was lured to a path under the pretense of a drug transaction, a setup that would prove to be a fatal robbery. He was found with gunshot wounds and pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident was not a random act of violence; the investigation revealed that the parties involved were known to each other.
The ensuing police investigation swiftly led to the identification and arrest of five individuals connected to the planned robbery and subsequent murder. Among them were two adults, 20-year-old Kawain Tyrell Smalls and 18-year-old Kymothy-Tyriq Desean Wilson, and three juveniles. Smalls was identified as the shooter and faced a murder charge, while the others were charged with conspiracy. According to the complaint, the group had planned to rob Brenden of marijuana. Smalls allegedly shot the teen at close range and fired several more rounds into his body. One of the juvenile suspects, 17-year-old Deion Nathaniel Moses, was initially sought by police before he turned himself in.
The legal process brought some measure of justice for Brenden's family. In November 2015, Kawain Tyrell Smalls, the accused ringleader, pleaded guilty to first-degree murder. The prosecution indicated they would seek a lengthy prison sentence of over 50 years for his role in the senseless killing. While Brenden's family acknowledged he had been using marijuana to cope with depression stemming from being bullied, they mourned the loss of a son they described as a good boy who did not deserve his violent end.
