The investigation into Jones's murder, a joint effort by the Dinwiddie County Sheriff's Office and the Petersburg Bureau of Police, led to the arrests of two men: Devin Thomas and Joseph Bryan Phillip. The motive for the killing was believed to be an act of revenge stemming from a dispute over street protocol, though it was not officially classified as a gang-related crime. The brutal nature of the crime drew significant attention in the community.
In the ensuing legal proceedings, Devin Thomas chose to enter an Alford plea to a charge of second-degree murder.
