In the early morning hours of January 31, 2015, the life of 26-year-old Kristin Leigh Hambleton, a White/Caucasian female, was tragically cut short in her Newport News, Virginia, home. A registered nurse at Riverside Regional Medical Center and a mother to two sons, Jason and Noah, she was found with a fatal gunshot wound to her face.
Initially, the circumstances surrounding her death were presented as a terrible accident.
Charles Everett Land, a 24-year-old Newport News firefighter and an ex-boyfriend of Hambleton's, was present at the scene and told police a harrowing tale. He claimed that he had brought a handgun to her residence on Windbrook Drive and that the two began to 'play and dry fire the gun multiple times.' According to Land's initial account, during this reckless handling of the firearm, Kristin accidentally shot herself in the face.
However, as investigators and crime scene technicians meticulously examined the scene, inconsistencies began to emerge that cast doubt on Land's version of events. Authorities noted that the handgun, which was found in Kristin's hand, appeared to have been manipulated after the shooting. This led investigators to believe that the crime scene had been deliberately staged. The evidence suggested that the gun was placed back in her hand after she was shot, a deliberate act to alter the original state of the scene.
Based on these findings, Charles Everett Land was arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter. Faced with the evidence, he later admitted to altering the scene out of fear. Land was ultimately sentenced to 10 years in prison, with eight of those years suspended. At the time of her death, Kristin was married to Joseph Hambleton, though the couple had been living apart. The case stands as a somber reminder of the devastating consequences of firearm mishandling.
