On a summer evening in Newport News, Virginia, the life of 29-year-old Patricia Morgan Joseph was tragically cut short. On July 30, 2017, she was at her home in the Chesapeake Village Mobile Home Park, spending time with her two young sons, her new boyfriend, and her father, Jessie Abraham Barnes. The ordinary evening turned horrific when a knock came at the door.
When Patricia answered, she was met with gunfire.
The shooter was identified as Amos Jacob Arroyo, Patricia's ex-boyfriend and the father of her two children. After shooting Patricia, Arroyo then shot her father, Jessie, as he tried to find cover. Patricia was pronounced dead at the scene, and her father succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital. The brutal events unfolded in front of Patricia's two sons, who were just six and one years old at the time.
Following the murders, Arroyo fled the area, sparking a manhunt. He was eventually apprehended in Texas. His trial was marked by emotionally charged testimony, including from his own son, who recounted the traumatic events of that evening to the jury. Jonathan Yeaman, Patricia's boyfriend who survived by hiding in a closet, also testified. The evidence presented, including the powerful eyewitness accounts, led to Amos Jacob Arroyo being found guilty on two counts of first-degree murder. The conviction brought a measure of justice to the family for the devastating loss of Patricia and her father.
