In the early hours of a Wednesday morning in Hampton, Virginia, the life of 29-year-old Dwayne Spivey was tragically cut short. On June 24, 2015, police responded to a call of a shooting in the 4800 block of 81st Street. Upon arrival, they discovered two men with gunshot wounds. One of them, Dwayne Spivey, a male resident of Newport News, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The second man, who was injured but survived, was identified as the suspect in the fatal shooting.
The investigation revealed a violent confrontation had taken place inside the residence. The suspect, 22-year-old Toure Amir Rahjan Shaw of Hampton, had reportedly gained entry into the home, leading to a dispute with Spivey. The altercation escalated into an exchange of gunfire, resulting in both men being shot. Shaw was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and remained in police custody while receiving treatment.
Following the initial investigation, Toure Amir Rahjan Shaw was charged with one count of murder, one count of breaking and entering while armed, one count of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Friends and family remembered Dwayne 'Squeak' Spivey as a loving father and a devoted fan of the Dallas Cowboys. His mother, who had lost another son in a car accident just ten months prior, mourned the loss of another child to violence. A year after his death, Spivey's family held a vigil, calling for an end to gun violence in their community. At that time, they were still awaiting a trial date for the man accused of his murder.
