In the early morning hours of August 2, 2015, the life of 22-year-old Richard W. Owens was cut short in a fatal shooting in Norfolk, Virginia. The incident unfolded shortly after 4:30 a.m. in the 900 block of Bagnall Road, where Owens was discovered deceased outside a residence. He was a male and the father of a young son.
The investigation into Owens' death quickly led police to a related scene just a few blocks away.
In the 800 block of East Olney Road, officers found 19-year-old Al'Jae R. Walton suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Detectives determined that the two incidents were connected, concluding that Owens and Walton had been involved in an altercation that escalated to an exchange of gunfire. After the shootout, Walton fled the initial scene but collapsed nearby due to his injuries.
Walton was transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital and was listed in critical condition for several days. Following his release from the hospital on August 8, 2015, he was taken into custody by the Norfolk Police. He was subsequently transported to the Norfolk City Jail.
Al'Jae R. Walton was charged with one count of second-degree murder and one count of the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony in connection with the death of Richard Owens. He was held in the Norfolk City Jail without bond.
