In the fall of 2015, the life of 29-year-old Brandon Scott Carter was tragically cut short in Lynchburg, Virginia. On November 10, 2015, Carter was the victim of a fatal drive-by shooting on Cliff Street. He was struck in the shoulder by a bullet fired from a moving vehicle and later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. This violent act was not random, as the investigation would soon reveal a preceding altercation that escalated to a devastating conclusion.
The events leading to Carter's death began a day earlier at a local convenience store, where he was involved in a fight. This dispute set in motion a chain of events that would have fatal consequences. The investigation into the shooting quickly identified two suspects: Travis Jermale Singleton, a 20-year-old from Richmond County, and DaJuan Gray, a former student at Virginia University of Lynchburg. Both men were subsequently arrested in connection with the crime.
The ensuing legal proceedings brought to light the roles each man allegedly played in the shooting. Authorities charged Singleton with second-degree murder, revealing that he was on probation at the time of the incident and had a history of legal troubles. The prosecution asserted that Singleton was the driver of the vehicle from which the fatal shots were fired. DaJuan Gray, the passenger, was identified as the shooter. Gray ultimately pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. He was sentenced to 17 and a half years in prison for his role in Brandon Carter's death.
