In the winter of 2016, a young man's life was cut short in Danville, Virginia. Devontaye Jermaine Johnson, a 23-year-old male, was killed by gun violence on February 24th in the 200 block of Halifax Street. The incident prompted an investigation that would ultimately lead to the indictment of four individuals.
As the investigation progressed, four suspects were identified and charged in connection with Johnson's death.
Derek Lamont Hairston was charged with first-degree murder, armed burglary, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and robbery. Another suspect, Andreus Dewayne Royal, faced even more severe charges, including capital murder, robbery, burglary with intent to commit robbery while armed, and use of a firearm in the commission of both robbery and capital murder.
Two other individuals were also implicated in the crime. Alexander O'Neal McGuire was charged with first-degree murder, while Jeni Leann Merricks faced a charge of being an accessory after the fact to first-degree murder.
The legal process saw each of the four accused enter guilty pleas. In July of that year, both McGuire and Merricks pleaded guilty to their respective charges. They were followed by Royal, who pleaded guilty to capital murder in September. The final suspect, Hairston, entered a guilty plea in November, bringing a close to the prosecutorial phase of the case.
