In the quiet early morning hours of February 28, 2016, a selfless act of brotherly love ended in tragedy in a Petersburg, Virginia apartment. Deshawn Shaw, a 22-year-old male, was fatally shot while shielding his younger brother from a barrage of bullets. The incident, which also left his 20-year-old brother, Dontavia Shaw, with non-life-threatening injuries, unfolded during what police believe was a robbery that went tragically wrong.
Dontavia Shaw recounted the harrowing moments,
stating that he and his brother were with the suspects, whom they had just met earlier that night. An altercation broke out, and Dontavia was shot first. In a final, heroic act, Deshawn threw himself on top of his younger brother to protect him and was struck by multiple gunshots. Paramedics arrived at the scene to find both brothers suffering from gunshot wounds and transported them to a nearby hospital, where Deshawn Shaw succumbed to his injuries.
In the wake of the shooting, investigators quickly identified and apprehended two suspects. Daekwon Castelle, who was 18 years old at the time, and an unnamed 17-year-old male were arrested in connection with the deadly incident. Both teenagers were subsequently charged with homicide and robbery for their alleged roles in the death of Deshawn Shaw and the wounding of his brother. They were held without bond pending further legal proceedings.
The case against the two suspects then entered the judicial system.
