On a summer afternoon in Petersburg, Virginia, the life of a veteran law enforcement officer was tragically cut short. Dinwiddie County Sheriff's Lieutenant James 'Bo' Weaver, a 59-year-old male, was killed on June 27, 2005. He was a 16-year veteran of the Sheriff's Office.
Lieutenant Weaver was transporting a 15-year-old male, Joe Thomas, from a court appearance back to the Crater Juvenile Detention Center. At approximately 1:30 p.m., a struggle ensued between the two on Tollgate Lane. During the altercation, the teenager managed to gain control of Lieutenant Weaver's service weapon.
After being forced to drive to a residential cul-de-sac, both Weaver and the juvenile exited the vehicle. The teenager then opened fire, shooting Lieutenant Weaver multiple times. The fatal shots struck him in the abdomen and back. Lieutenant Weaver was airlifted to Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries later that evening.
The suspect, Joe Thomas, fled the scene and hid in a nearby apartment. Following a 90-minute standoff and a phone call from his father, Thomas surrendered to the authorities. He was charged as an adult with multiple offenses, including capital murder, use of a firearm, abduction, felony escape, grand larceny, and possession of a firearm as a juvenile. On June 13, 2006, Joe Thomas II, then 16, pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and six other charges in Petersburg Circuit Court.
