On the evening of March 11, 2016, the life of 23-year-old Aaron L. Hunter, a Black/African American male, was tragically cut short in a violent encounter within the walls of a Suffolk, Virginia apartment. The fatal incident unfolded at the Wilson Pines Apartments on East Washington Street, where a robbery escalated into a homicide.
Two individuals, later identified as Markelyn Lamontre Jones and Mandocous Jayni Rivers, forced their way into the residence with the intent to rob the
occupants. A confrontation ensued, during which Hunter was shot. Despite the immediate response from emergency services, he was pronounced deceased at the scene. Another man in the apartment was assaulted during the home invasion, and a third was shot at but managed to escape physical injury.
The Suffolk Police Department swiftly launched an investigation that led to the identification and apprehension of the two suspects. Mandocous J. Rivers, who was 19 at the time, and Markelyn Lamontre Jones, then 17, were both taken into custody. They faced a litany of serious charges, including first-degree murder, robbery, and firearms offenses. Although Jones was a juvenile, his case was transferred to the adult criminal court system.
Both men were subsequently brought to justice for their roles in Aaron Hunter's death. In a jury trial held in December 2017, Mandocous Jayni Rivers was found guilty and, in March 2018, received a substantial sentence of 138 years in prison. Markelyn Lamontre Jones initially pleaded guilty to six charges, including second-degree murder, in November 2016. After an attempt to withdraw his plea, he was ultimately sentenced in May 2018 to 38 years of incarceration.
