In the early hours of May 15, 2016, the life of 17-year-old Jermell Hayes was tragically cut short in Newport News, Virginia. A Black male, Hayes was discovered with multiple life-threatening gunshot wounds in the 300 block of Deputy Lane. The shooting occurred around 1 a.m. near a park and basketball court, a space typically filled with the laughter of children. Emergency services rushed Jermell to a local hospital, but his injuries proved to be too severe, and he was pronounced dead.
