In the early hours of May 15, 2016, the life of 17-year-old Jermell Hayes was tragically cut short in Newport News, Virginia. A Black male, Hayes was discovered with multiple life-threatening gunshot wounds in the 300 block of Deputy Lane. The shooting occurred around 1 a.m. near a park and basketball court, a space typically filled with the laughter of children.
Emergency services rushed Jermell to a local hospital, but his injuries proved to be too severe, and he was pronounced dead.
The news of the young man's death sent ripples of grief and fear through the local community. Residents of the area voiced their concerns about the safety of their neighborhood, particularly for the children who frequented the very park where the violence had erupted. In the immediate aftermath and the months that followed, the Newport News Police Department investigated the homicide, but no suspects were publicly identified, and no arrests were made, leaving the case unsolved and a family desperate for answers.
Jermell's mother, Anita Gonzalez, was thrust into a nightmare from which she could not wake. She remembered her son as a lover of sneakers with a promising future ahead of him. In an effort to provide a safer environment for her family, she had even moved them to the neighboring city of Hampton and enrolled Jermell in a private school. Despite her best efforts, violence found its way into their lives. Gonzalez became a vocal advocate for justice for her son, reaching out to law enforcement and even writing to then-President Barack Obama in her quest for closure. Her relentless pursuit of answers highlighted a mother's love and the painful reality of a community grappling with the unsolved murder of a young life.
