On a tragic evening in Norman, Virginia, a quiet community was shaken by a violent series of events that resulted in the death of 74-year-old James Stewart. On June 7, 2016, a domestic dispute turned deadly when a neighbor sought refuge from her estranged husband at Stewart's residence. The man, identified as 49-year-old Willis N. Walker Jr., had threatened his wife at gunpoint, causing her to flee to the safety of her neighbor's home.
The situation escalated when Walker pursued his
wife, forcing his way into James Stewart's house. Once inside, Walker tragically shot and killed the elderly man. After fatally wounding Stewart, Walker located and physically assaulted his estranged wife. A second woman who was also inside the home managed to hide and call 911, alerting the Culpeper County Sheriff's Office to the violent intrusion.
Upon the arrival of sheriff's deputies, they were confronted by an armed Walker. He was wielding a shotgun and, despite repeated commands from the officers to drop his weapon, he refused to comply. Walker then began to advance towards the deputies, threatening them with the firearm. In the ensuing confrontation, a deputy fired at Walker, who died at the scene.
Walker's estranged wife was transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries she sustained during the assault. The Virginia State Police took charge of the investigation into the officer-involved shooting. No deputies were injured during the incident that claimed the lives of both James Stewart and his assailant, Willis N. Walker Jr.
