In the summer of 2016, the life of 19-year-old LaKeith D. Hurd was tragically cut short in Richmond, Virginia. On the first day of July, his body was discovered in a grassy area along Laurelbrook Drive, bearing the fatal wounds of a shooting. Hurd, an African-American male, was just weeks away from his twentieth birthday.
The Richmond Police Department launched a homicide investigation into Hurd's death, which marked another grim statistic in a year that saw a significant number of
murders in the city. Despite their efforts, the case grew cold. No suspects were publicly identified, and no arrests have been made in connection with the killing of LaKeith Hurd.
The pain of his unsolved murder is compounded by a previous family tragedy. Two years prior, in 2014, Hurd's mother, Ebony Hurd, was also a victim of gun violence, her life taken in a double homicide that also remains unsolved. The back-to-back violent deaths of a mother and her son left a profound and lasting scar on their family and the Richmond community.
