In the early evening of November 6, 2016, a shooting shattered the calm of a Gainesville, Virginia parking lot, leaving a young woman dead. Linh Thi Pham, a 26-year-old female, was sitting in her car after leaving her job at a salon in the Virginia Gateway Promenade when she was fatally shot. First responders transported her to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The investigation into her death quickly focused on a 33-year-old Ashburn man named Bryan Christopher Yu.
Police determined that the shooting was not a random act of violence, as Yu and Pham were acquaintances. The two had a child together and were reportedly scheduled to have a child support hearing the day after the fatal shooting. Authorities arrested Yu and initially charged him with first-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
Ultimately, Bryan Christopher Yu entered an Alford plea to the lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter. This type of plea allowed him to maintain his innocence while acknowledging that the prosecution had enough evidence to likely secure a conviction. The charges of first-degree murder and use of a firearm were dropped as part of the plea agreement. In May 2017, a judge sentenced Yu to 10 years in prison, the maximum penalty for the charge. Linh Thi Pham's family, though unhappy with the length of the sentence, reportedly agreed to the plea deal to ensure Yu would not go free and would not have access to his and Linh's daughter.
