In the early morning hours of April 25, 2017, the life of 26-year-old Tyrone Lee Bailey of Chesapeake, Virginia, was tragically cut short. Emergency dispatchers in Suffolk, Virginia, received a call at 6:01 a.m. reporting a man with a gunshot wound at the Magnolia Lakes Trailer Park located in the 1100 block of Nansemond Parkway. When police and rescue personnel arrived, they found Bailey suffering from a serious injury.
Despite their efforts to provide emergency medical treatment, he succumbed to his injuries while on the way to the hospital.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to a domestic situation. Suffolk Police identified 28-year-old Troyonne Markest Ellise, also from Chesapeake, as the suspect. Investigators determined that Bailey and Ellise were known to each other. Ellise was subsequently arrested and faced multiple charges, including second-degree murder, armed burglary, and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. He was held at the Western Tidewater Regional Jail without bond.
The legal proceedings that followed took an unexpected turn. In May of 2018, the murder trial for Troyonne Markest Ellis began. However, the trial was abruptly halted when a question posed by the Deputy Commonwealth's Attorney was deemed inappropriate. This led to the defense attorney's request for a mistrial, which the judge granted. The case against Ellis was complicated by this development, leaving the resolution of Tyrone Lee Bailey's death in a state of legal uncertainty.
