On the evening of May 10, 2018, Jacqueline Perry, a 54-year-old female, was fatally shot while sitting in the passenger seat of a car in Petersburg, Virginia. She had accompanied her friend, Everette Tucker, to a house on South Dunlop Street to buy cigarettes. An argument over a parking spot escalated into a tragic confrontation.
Everette Tucker had parked his vehicle across the street from the residence when a woman insisted he move his car.
Tucker refused, asserting his right to park on a public street. Shortly after, a man identified as Derrick Gerard Tucker, Jr., became involved in the dispute. Following a verbal exchange, Tucker, Jr. fired a gun, striking Perry in the head. Everette Tucker immediately drove his friend to the hospital, but she succumbed to her injuries.
Derrick Gerard Tucker, Jr. was later arrested in connection with the shooting. During his police interview, he gave conflicting accounts, at one point claiming he only fired a cap gun and at another, that he shot into the air to frighten Everette Tucker.
Ultimately, a jury convicted Derrick Gerard Tucker, Jr. on multiple charges, including first-degree murder, malicious wounding, shooting into an occupied vehicle, and two counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony. An appeal was later filed, arguing that the jury should have been instructed on the lesser-included offense of voluntary manslaughter, but the court upheld the original conviction.
