On May 27, 2023, the life of 34-year-old Tewana Markye' Williams was tragically cut short in a fatal shooting in Petersburg, Virginia. Williams, a mother and a licensed cosmetologist, was found by police officers who were responding to a report of shots fired at a residence on Talley Avenue at approximately 8:54 a.m. She was pronounced dead at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds.
The incident is being investigated as a domestic homicide.
Just hours before her death, Williams had made a poignant post on Facebook, alluding to overcoming storms in her life. Tragically, her life would end in violence shortly after. Authorities have reported that children were present inside the home at the time of the shooting. Neighbors later recounted hearing an argument followed by the sound of gunfire.
In connection with the shooting, police arrested 32-year-old Donald Johnson of Petersburg. He has been charged with first-degree murder, along with several other charges related to the incident. The relationship between Williams and Johnson was described as an on-and-off-again romantic partnership.
Tewana Williams was a graduate of Petersburg High School and had furthered her education to become a licensed cosmetologist, a career she was passionate about. She was remembered by friends and family as a loving and caring person. The community was left shaken by her sudden and violent death.
