In the small community of Hurley, Virginia, the life of 34-year-old Matthew Shon Hurley was tragically cut short on Wednesday, March 6, 2019. A lifelong resident of Buchanan County, Hurley was a father and a construction worker who also worked part-time at a local hardware store. He was known for his love of singing, football, hunting, camping, and fishing.
On that fateful day in the Paw Paw section of Hurley, both Matthew Hurley and another man, Jeremiah May, were discovered with
gunshot wounds. Hurley was pronounced dead at the scene. An investigation into the incident led authorities to believe that May had shot and killed Hurley before turning the gun on himself.
Following the investigation, Jeremiah May was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with Hurley's death. He was subsequently incarcerated in the Pike County Jail in Kentucky to await further legal proceedings. The community was left to mourn the loss of a man described as a loving father, son, and brother. Funeral services were held at the Kelsa Chapel Church, and he was laid to rest in the Matthew Hurley Cemetery near his home.
