In the fading light of a December evening in South Boston, Virginia, the life of 20-year-old Davonte Shamar Powell was tragically cut short. On that Saturday night, outside a local vape shop, a sudden eruption of violence left Powell with a fatal gunshot wound to the head; he was pronounced dead at the scene. Another teenager, a 17-year-old male, was also critically injured in the shooting, having been shot in the neck.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital but ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The hours following the incident were filled with a tense search for the person responsible. Law enforcement, including the South Boston Police, Halifax County Sheriff's Office, and Virginia State Police, descended upon the area. Their search, however, came to an end when a 17-year-old male voluntarily surrendered to the South Boston Police Department. This teenager, also a resident of Halifax County, was subsequently charged with two counts of second-degree murder.
In the wake of the shooting, investigators recovered a handgun believed to be the weapon used in the commission of the crime. The alleged shooter was taken into custody and transported to a juvenile detention facility. Friends and community members remembered Davonte, a 2017 graduate of Halifax County High School where he had played on the football team, as 'Tae.' The community was left to grapple with the sudden and violent loss of two young lives.
