On a tragic day, January 10, 2020, the life of 20-year-old Najada Chanel Joyce, a Black female from Martinsville, Virginia, was cut short. She was discovered in an overturned car on Soapstone Road in Henry County. Inside the vehicle with her was her 20-year-old boyfriend, Jalen Millner. While the scene initially appeared to be a car accident, the reality of the situation was far more grim.
First responders found Najada deceased at the scene, while Jalen was alive but succumbed to his injuries shortly after being extricated from the vehicle.
Subsequent investigation by the Virginia State Police revealed a heartbreaking story. The medical examiner determined that Najada Joyce had died from a gunshot wound to the head, and it was not the crash that had killed her. Jalen Millner also died from a gunshot wound, which was found to be self-inflicted. A handgun was recovered from within the car, leading authorities to conclude the incident was a murder-suicide. The investigation confirmed that Millner had shot and killed Joyce before taking his own life. The crash of the vehicle occurred after the gunshots had been fired.

She was a graduate of Magna Vista High School's class of 2018 and was a student at Patrick Henry Community College. She was remembered as a bright and beloved young woman.
