In the winter of 2020, the community of Kenbridge, Virginia, was unsettled by the discovery of a young man's body. On January 15, the remains of 19-year-old Antonio Diez Rich were found in a ditch on Moores Ordinary Street by a Virginia Department of Transportation crew. An autopsy later confirmed that he had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. The African American teenager's body showed signs of a struggle, including an injured hand and a torn ear, and had been wrapped in plastic, suggesting a
calculated attempt to conceal the crime.
The Virginia State Police, in conjunction with the Lunenburg County Sheriff's Office, launched a homicide investigation into Antonio's death. In the days following the discovery, authorities appealed to the public for any information that might lead to a break in the case. His mother expressed her belief that her son knew his killer, convinced that he would not have been lured into such a situation by a stranger. The investigation explored various leads, but no immediate arrests were made, and no suspects were publicly identified.
The death of Antonio Diez Rich became a source of growing concern in Lunenburg County as it was one of several unsolved deaths and disappearances of young African American men in the area between 2020 and 2023. Names of individuals known to associate with Antonio also surfaced during the investigation into the later death of 17-year-old Cion Jere Carroll, whose body was found in a shallow grave. To date, the murder of Antonio Diez Rich remains unsolved, and no arrests have been announced in connection with his death.
