In the early hours of a Sunday morning in Norfolk, Virginia, a 20-year-old woman named Kyilene P. Torain was found suffering from a gunshot wound. The incident occurred around 12:30 a.m. on July 26, 2020, in the 500 block of Mariners Way. First responders arrived at the scene and transported her to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where she ultimately succumbed to her injuries.

Yates, a 30-year-old Norfolk man, was charged with second-degree murder and use of a firearm in connection with the shooting. He was identified as the primary suspect in her killing.
In addition to Yates, four other people were taken into custody and faced charges related to the circumstances surrounding Torain's death. Adriana A. Hamlett, 21, and Candance D. Montague, 37, were both charged with attempted robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery. A 17-year-old female juvenile also faced the same charges. Another individual, 20-year-old Jadean Williams, was charged with conspiracy to commit robbery. Authorities did not immediately release further details on how the alleged robbery was connected to the fatal shooting.
