On a Tuesday afternoon in November 2020, the life of 30-year-old Julian Rashad Martin, a Black male from Reston, Virginia, was tragically cut short. On November 24th, at approximately 2:25 p.m., police responded to reports of gunfire in the 1000 block of Queens Court in Herndon. Upon their arrival, they discovered Martin lying in the street, suffering from grave injuries.
He was rushed to a nearby Reston hospital, but tragically, he succumbed to his wounds.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed authorities toward a suspect. With the assistance of the Fairfax County Police Department's Special Operations Division, Herndon police were able to take 20-year-old Jason Byrd of Herndon into custody at his home. Byrd was subsequently charged with second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony in connection with Martin's death.
Further investigation into the homicide revealed that the case was more complex, leading to a second arrest. Detectives identified Jason Byrd's brother, 20-year-old Jameel Byrd, also from Herndon, as an alleged accomplice. Jameel Byrd was taken into custody and charged with being an accessory to second-degree murder and robbery. Following his arrest, he was transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center, where he was held without bond as the investigation into the circumstances surrounding Julian Rashad Martin's death continued.
