In the pre-dawn hours of September 15, 2025, a quiet street in Herndon, Virginia, became the scene of a violent and targeted attack that claimed the life of 45-year-old Irfan Syed. The male victim was discovered inside a car on the 12700 block of Fantasia Drive near Dranesville just after 5:00 a.m., suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body.
Neighbors in the area reported hearing what sounded like a vehicle crash followed by the sound of gunfire, prompting calls to the authorities. Responding officers found Syed gravely wounded, and he was rushed to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
The investigation into the homicide quickly revealed a brutal sequence of events. Detectives determined that the assailant had first used his own vehicle to ram into Syed's car. Following the collision, the attacker fired several shots at Syed. The suspect then attempted to escape the scene, but his own vehicle became disabled a short distance away. As law enforcement began their investigation, a significant break in the case came within hours. A 25-year-old man, identified as Muhammad Muzammil, of no fixed address, approached a member of the community and confessed that he had shot someone. That individual contacted police, who promptly took Muzammil into custody.
Following his arrest, Muzammil reportedly told an officer, 'I'm the shooter, I killed somebody.' A K-9 unit later located the firearm that was believed to have been used in the killing. Muhammad Muzammil was charged with second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. He was subsequently held without bond at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center.
