In the early hours of a Tuesday in Hampton, Virginia, the life of 24-year-old Maalik Shaheed Payne was cut short. On June 15, 2021, an exchange of gunfire erupted in the 1500 block of North King Street, leaving two men struck by bullets. Payne was grievously wounded and, despite being rushed to a local hospital, he succumbed to his injuries. The incident, which unfolded in front of an apartment complex, also left another man, 46-year-old Jorge Luis Morales of Newport News, with life-threatening
injuries.
The investigation into the shooting quickly identified the surviving man as a suspect. Morales, who had been dropped off at the same hospital, was arrested in connection with the fatal shooting. The Hampton Police Division announced that he was facing serious charges, including one count of murder, one count of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and one count of possession of a firearm by a felon. Following his arrest, Morales was taken into custody and held at the Hampton city jail. The motive and the specific circumstances that led to the deadly exchange of gunfire remained under investigation as the authorities worked to piece together the events of that tragic morning.
