On the morning of July 23, 2021, a distressing series of events unfolded, leaving a community in shock and a family heartbroken. Ashley, a devoted mother, daughter, and sister, was fatally shot at a residence on Ball Road.

Ashley's estranged husband, David Curtis Whitt, who was 36 at the time, was identified as the suspect. After the shooting, he fled the scene and barricaded himself inside another home on Jewell Ridge Road. Authorities who responded to the initial shooting incident found themselves in a difficult situation as they attempted to communicate with Whitt, who refused any contact. When law enforcement eventually gained entry to the residence, they discovered him with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
In addition to the fatal shooting of his estranged wife, David Curtis Whitt was also accused of shooting another individual, Chris Shelton, who survived the attack. Following the incident, Whitt was airlifted to a trauma unit for medical treatment. A graduate of Richlands High School, she had found her calling as a full-time caregiver to senior citizens at the Mountain View Retirement Home in Lebanon, Virginia.
