On November 9, 2021, a 27-year-old Black or African American mother of six, Ariel McLaurin, was tragically killed in her home in Portsmouth, Virginia. The incident occurred around 5:34 PM in the 2100 block of Pearl Street. When first responders arrived at the scene, they found McLaurin with a life-threatening gunshot wound. Despite their efforts, she succumbed to her injuries at the scene before she could be taken to a hospital.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to her
27-year-old boyfriend, Ryan Winfield. Less than 48 hours after the fatal shooting, Winfield turned himself in to the Portsmouth Sheriff's Office. He was subsequently charged with second-degree murder. Reports indicate that the shooting stemmed from a domestic dispute. Court documents and social media posts from Winfield suggested a volatile relationship and included threatening messages. On the day of the incident, following an argument, Winfield fired three shots through the front door of McLaurin's home, which resulted in her death.
In the ensuing legal proceedings, Ryan Winfield pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. As a result of his guilty plea, other charges against him, including the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and discharging a firearm within or at a building, were not pursued by the prosecution. His sentencing was scheduled for August 10, 2023. McLaurin's death has had a profound impact on her family, particularly her six young children. Her mother has been a vocal advocate for justice for her daughter and has spoken about the devastating consequences of domestic violence.
