On what should have been a quiet night in Portsmouth, Virginia, the life of 35-year-old Lawrence MacCabe Cowfer was violently cut short. On February 19, 2022, a dispute with his neighbor escalated into a fatal encounter that left a family shattered. The evening took a dark turn after Jessica McBee, Cowfer's partner, returned home with their neighbor, Johnny Rodriguez, and his girlfriend, Tiffany Miles, after a night out at some bars. Cowfer had remained at home with their six children and McBee's niece.
An argument erupted between Cowfer and Rodriguez upon their return to the duplex where they lived as next-door neighbors. The situation intensified, with Rodriguez standing in the doorway of Cowfer's home, yelling at him. In a tragic turn of events, Rodriguez, who was armed with a gun, shot Cowfer at point-blank range in the face. The fatal shot was fired in the presence of Cowfer's children, who were witnesses to their father's death. Medics were called to the residence in the 600 block of Mount Vernon Avenue, but Cowfer was pronounced dead at the scene.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Johnny Rodriguez fled the scene. However, more than a week later, he turned himself in to the police. Rodriguez was subsequently charged with first-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a murder, and two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. In November 2023, a jury found Johnny Rodriguez guilty of shooting and killing his neighbor. He was scheduled to be sentenced on January 5.
